Mission Accomplished… Big Cat Rescue #7
Warriors of Wildlife partnered with Free The Wild to rescue and relocate 5 lions and 1 tiger from Ukraine to our sanctuary, Simbonga in South Africa.
All 6 of these big cats originate from two zoos in Ukraine, who, if not relocated would have faced a very unknown and bleak future. The Ukrainian laws on keeping wild animals have recently changed and this has ultimately put pressure on the owners of wild animals to comply with the law, ensuring that they must build larger enclosures, register the animals and apply for permission to keep said animals. The 6 big cats live in unacceptable and in-humane conditions. Lets give them a chance at life.
One of the lionesses, Khaya lived for nearly 3 years since birth lived a life alone in 30m² of concrete and steel.
The brother and sister pair, Aslan and Jen who were currently 2 years old(at time of rescue 2022), lived in the same zoo as the Khaya but lived in an old Soviet Union style “pit” enclosure with nothing to look at except the walls surrounding them. Due to the legislative changes, the zoo has no additional space or need for these lions which makes their future very bleak.
The other 2 lions are a mother and son pair, Cher and Hercules, which come from a private zoo in mid-west Ukraine. In addition to the 2 lions, there is also a tiger, Gina and she has been through a lot with her mate simply disappearing with no explanation and she has lost her tail in a fight with a neighboring lion through the cage bars. This has resulted in the zoo choosing to board up sections of her cage.
