Mrs White relocated to our sanctuary.
Mission Accomplished #5… Lioness Relocated
Mrs White, a 20 year old white lioness has been relocated to our sanctuary at Simbonga.
A fatal tiger attack on an employee occurred at a park in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) in June 2021 and the public demanded that the tiger involved be put down. LUCKILY, with all the right people involved and fighting the good fight for Jasper (tiger involved), both him AND his sister whom he’s lived with his entire life, were able to be relocated with little to no notice to a Big Cat Center up near Bethlehem in the Free State. Thank goodness they had space and the resources for not only him, but his sister as well.
Now, following the unfortunate tiger incident, as well as a previous incident of 2 captive brown hyenas escaping the Park’s enclosure and premises in March 2021, who were ultimately killed, the local government department, multiple NGO’s and other governing bodies in collaboration with the parks management made the decision that all captive wild animals must be re-homed to suitable and ethical facilities and that is how we have gotten involved with the two older girls, Mrs. White and Lilly.
The younger animals at the facility have been able to find homes much quicker, and for us, being one of the closest facilities to the Park and due to our sanctuary managements personal connection to the individual animals and their previous history at the facility involved, we were more than happy to assist in any way from the start.
Mrs. White is an older lioness, and due to her age, the process of sedating her, tending to medical needs, and transporting her, comes at a much higher risk than the average lion.
The next hurdle we now face is to ensure the best care we can possibly provide. This starts with blood analysis so we can specify the best approach to her physical well-being. The initial tests are looking positive, and we will wait for more in depth results over the coming days.
From an ethical standpoint, Mrs. White’s situation has been extremely challenging, but we were more than happy to give her a chance at a new lease on life. We are now so excited to watch her flourish in her new forever home and give her the best life we can.
Due to the older ages of the two girls, if we weren’t able to take on their care, the reality for them would be euthanasia.
We were able to secure funding for the first enclosure for Mrs White and now we will begin approaching past volunteers and other connections for the building of a camp for Lilly.
Although they may not have much time left in this physical world, we know we can give them a beautiful home while they are still here, and they absolutely deserve the chance to a new lease on life, even if it may not be for too much longer.
